According to the C6 desk sergeant, "technically there is no such thing as saving spots on the street." However, local custom allows those who "shovel out" their car during a big snowstorm can reserve their space. This custom although not legal, is overlooked for a term no longer than 48 hours from the end of the snow emergency.

ReplyDelete4 years ago, when there was no resident parking laws in Southie, I could understand people's frustration when a a person from another city would take up space for as long as they wanted, overnight even.
ReplyDeleteNow, you MUST have a resident sticker to park in Southie (except 4 a very few guest spots) so it makes no sense to save a space. If you do use a space saver, that's fine, I enjoy throwing your silly space savers into dumpsters and abandoned lots. Oh, and I can't stand the Red Sox. Lets Go Mets !
I shovel the spot for my 60 year old neighbor when I clean my spot and outside. Would you want your 60 mother shoveling when she came home at 5:30 in the dark? No, you wouldn't. Do any of you live in Southie and own a car?

ReplyDeleteFirst I would like to point out that it is not only Southie residents that do this, it's many other cities in the Boston area. Second, the reason why people do it is because people who don't live here treat streets closest to the T station like there own personal parking lot. If someone wants to pay me to park in front of my house all day then fine, but if I have to park 2 blocks away from my house with my 2 small children then I'll put a chair there. I agree that people should not put the "spot holder" out for more then 48 hours, but as they say it's hard to teach and old dog new tricks.

ReplyDeleteThe whole space saving practice is stupid. But living in southie when I drive by all the space savers and know I'm driving home to my reserved spot, they make me laugh. Glad my car isn't on the street.

I don't have a problem walking the two blocks; I was just trying to point out that as soon as I leave in the AM people are waiting to park in front of my house to then walk to the train. I don't care if they stay there as long as they are gone by the time I get home. I do understand that the city owns the street, but I pay my taxes through work and my taxes for my house (Yes, I do own my house). I don't even put a barrel or anything when I'm gone because there is a health center near my house and I want sick people to be able to park so before you start calling people names get your facts straight. If you want to make a comment about what I said then fine, but you didn't see me call anyone a lazy slob or talking s**t.

ReplyDeleteSince the day I moved to southie i have considered the way people "save" spots to be as selfish as something can be. For the life of me I don't understand how the people that do it convince themselves that they are entitled to do so. We ALL shovel our cars out after a snow storm. The cars that sit there covered with snow..guess what..we ALL suffer from the fact that some people travel for their job and will be gone during a snow storm..it stinks..but it is what it is and we ALL lose parking spots. Still, the bottom line is all of us that drive to work shovel our cars out. The number of cars that leave for work doesn't vary b/c it's going to snow..therefore there will be the same number of parking spots as a non-snow day. Seriously people stop being so selfish and childish with this "it's my spot, i shoveled out!" bogus argument.

ReplyDeleteThe fact is that if you take this "tradition", no one will bother to shovel out theirs spots. If someone is going to take the spot anyway, most residents will either floor it to get out or just shovel enough to pull out. It would be a mess. So in that regard, I agree that we should be allowed spot savers for a limited time.
ReplyDeleteHowever, in my observation of the culprits, the abuse of this privilege is not a yuppie/lifer issue. it's an a**hole issue.
If you see a saver still out a week later, just chuck it. It's easy to be a hero in a blog, but very few actually do something about it.
Easy solution. Just start towing all the yuppies' cars who are still registered at their parent's house to save on insurance. They're are at least 10 of them on my block who just eat the $10 weekly ticket. They don't deserve a spot.

We could be headed to the next Great Depression, we hvae troops losing their lives daily, and there are people all over the world wondering where the next meal will come from. But none of it is as bad as having to circle the block for a parking spot. Obama should be putting all his effort into this issue.

ReplyDeleteWho else but someone who hasnt lived in southie their whole life would start a blog about parking!! Yeah it sucks that people keep their cones and what-not in a spot for days, but its because of the people who have no consideration for the person, who most likly spent a good deal of time shoveling out their spot, and to take their spot. If you people who are just moving into southie or have been here a few years just get over it!!! c'mon it's something thats been going on long befor you were here and it's going to happen long after you leave!! If you dont like it leave!! go back to where ever you came from, where you have a driveway...that way you dont have to deal with this!! Its part of southie!!

Why are you all complaining? If these people living in Southie could afford an appartment/house with a parking space, don't you think they would buy it? And it's hypocritical to name the people that save spaces "lazy". Those people are proactive, doing what they can to help themselves. This is selfish, but how else are we supposed to live? If everyone lived only to please one another, no one would be truely happy. Instead of complaining how about you DO SOMETHING if you think it's that big of an issue.

Where the heck was the trash truck after this last snowstorm? Why the heck can't they plow on street cleaning days in the winter?
ReplyDeleteI agree that if you do not shovel out the spot, you are not entitled to it so cones should not be placed out before storms. But on a serious not, If I spend time shoveling out a spot, and you decide to take it, be prepared to get all your windows smashed in. I'll stress you out 10x more than you stressed me out.
